EMDR.

EMDR stands for Eye Movement Desensitization and Reprocessing.

This technique uses bilateral stimulation, (either eye movement, aural or tactile), to assist in the processing of painful emotions. This is particularly helpful with intrusive images and overwhelming emotions following trauma. Desensitization to the emotional or physical pain occurs while negative beliefs are reprocessed.

When I use EMDR I tend to use tapping on alternate knees using a ruler, as this is less tiring for the client than tracking an object with their eyes.

EMDR is also useful as a relaxation and centring technique. It seems that occupying one part of the brain with stimulation aids relaxation and helps free thoughts and emotions. The end result is a shift from irrational fears to more rational beliefs and a release from, often long held and debilitating, painful emotions and flashbacks.
